Malaysia unconcerned over possible Singapore race

With all the talk of a night race in Singapore being on the cards in the near future, organizers of the Malaysian Grand Prix have confirmed that they are unconcerned that the geographical proximity to their event would be an issue.

Speaking to the local press, Sepang’s chairman Datuk Mokhzani Mahathir confirmed that his main priority right now is to extend their current agreement with FOM to continue past their original 2010 date and even if Singapore hosted an event, it could easily be organized for a time slot that doesn’t clash with theirs.

“I’ve been given the mandate by the Government to negotiate the hosting of the Malaysian Grand Prix beyond 2010. This, we have to secure this year,” he was quoted as saying in the New Strait Times. “If you look at all the Press statements that were coming out of Melbourne where there was supposed to be some announcements from Bernie Ecclestone, he was actually talking more about the viability of having F1 in certain areas. If you’re talking about having it on a temporary circuit like what Singapore is proposing, then our approach is different.”
