Norbert Haug has dismissed suggestions that the Monaco Grand Prix showed Lewis Hamilton that he should forget about winning a race in 2007.
The British press criticised McLaren heavily last week, after the Mercedes-powered team ordered the sensational 22-year-old rookie to follow team-mate Fernando Alonso to the chequered flag.
But Haug, who is Mercedes’ competition director, told the newspaper Express that the protection of Alonso’s winning chances will not become a trend.

Williams driver Nico Rosberg looked to be on track for a solid points scoring position in Sunday afternoon’s Monaco Grand Prix, the young German driver starting from fifth place on the grid, however he saw his chances disappear on the opening lap when by the time he exited Ste Devote he was squeezed out by the Renault of Giancarlo Fisichella, which allowed the one-stopping Nick Heidfeld to overtake his FW29 as well.
“Nick was very slow in the early laps and that wrecked my two-stop strategy because I was forced to lap significantly slower than my potential,” he explained on the team’s official website.

Lewis Hamilton continued his history making start to what will only be a fine Formula One career with another podium finish in the Monaco grand prix a week ago, the young Brit now making it five from five to stay at the top of the championship ladder alongside his double world championship winning teammate, Fernando Alonso, and the goal is to now add a top step finish to his resume in the upcoming Canadian Grand Prix.
However, while confident that he will do well in the Canadian arm of the championship, Lewis has never actually raced on the Gilles Villeneuve circuit in his racing career and everyone knows that this track has its own way of making history. That said though, there are ample opportunities to pass here, unlike Monaco, and driver skill is at the forefront, making his goal of a maiden win a real possibility….
